Fitness and Personality Types

By Dan Doenges | In Gym, Lifestyle | on October 21, 2021

You may have heard before that people play sports like their personality. Thinkers see the field and strategize. Aggressive people get into the action hard and fast. Detailed players execute plays with precision.  Working out and managing your fitness follows the same line of thinking. Here are some basic formulas to help match your personality-type and interests to a successful workout plan.

Routine Type

If you thrive off of having a consistent daily routine, then putting the gym into your weekly schedule could be just what you need. The success of our health and fitness relies on consistency.  This bodes well for the routine-lovers because the best way to be consistent is to make it routine. Once you’ve scheduled your workouts into your calendar and have successfully completed your first couple weeks; you’re on your way to a healthier routine to reach your fitness goals.

Sporty/Active Type

If you play sports, are the first to jump into a game of cornhole, or love a competitive game with friends; there is a way to be successful at the gym. If running on the treadmill for 20 minutes doesn’t sound like a fun way to get cardio in, then do it in a way you already know you enjoy doing. Getting on the court is a great way to do that!  Playing tennis, basketball or pickleball has a competitive component. It’s also mixed with the social setting that will make you want to come back for more.  Not only are you having a great time, but you’re also getting a workout in without trying too hard. This dynamic setting will work into your schedule because you’ll enjoy both the activity and how you feel after.

Technology Type

There is plenty of space in the world of fitness if you enjoy all the stimulation and intrigue that comes with new tech.  Between apps, wearables, and fitness videos; you can mix your technology and health in a way that stimulates both mind and body.  There are endless options out there when it comes to tracking your fitness goals or stats; things like Apple watches, scales that sink up to your phone, fitness apps to enhance workouts, and so much more. Whatever your goals are, you can find the right tech to assist you in your health and fitness journey. It can allow you to dive into all the benefits of mixing both interests together, while exponentially enhancing your growth.

People Person

For people who get their enjoyment from being with others, group fitness classes would be perfect for you. For many of us, the idea of doing it on our own just doesn’t sound fun. That’s why so many try to find themselves a workout buddy. But sometimes it can be difficult to find a partner with the same schedule or goals as you. Classes allow you to push yourself harder than you would on your own. You’ll feed off the group’s energy, music & atmosphere, while getting the enjoyment of community and fitness. You’ll have the benefit of accomplishing a workout, while also getting to see the people who make it fun and help hold you accountable.

Not-So-People Person

It’s not that you don’t like people, but you don’t always want to be surrounded by them or forced to engage. At first glance the gym or health club might not seem like the right place for you.  But working out can actually be a very solo sport. With some music and headphones, you can create your own space and use the time to disconnect from everything around you for a bit. Many of our members find great success in being able to have time to themselves while enjoying the benefits of a great strength or cardio workout. You may be in a building with other people, but the experience can be, and often is, very personal.

These certainly aren’t the only interests and personalities that exist or that can be successful at the gym. But it does go to show you how you can match who you are with how you workout. Make it work for you! The more you can match who you are with how you workout, the more you will enjoy your health and fitness journey.
