The gentle heat causes the blood vessels to expand which increase blood flow and lymphatic circulation. This system works to remove toxins from the body and strengthen the body’s immune defenses. In addition to an overall detoxification, the moistened air prevents mucous membranes from excessive drying and stimulates discharge of mucus from the throat and lungs. This process reduces inflammation and congestion of the upper respiratory system and can relieve symptoms of coughing, asthma, and throat irritation. A steam bath also opens the nasal passages often easing the distress associated with allergies.
